Uncanny Tales: The Watcher is a psychological horror game from the first-person perspective in which you take on the role of a private investigator looking for a missing person in a misty, deserted coastal town. The core of the game involves observation and deduction: you visit strange locations, collect clues and assemble the evidence in order to reveal the town’s hidden secrets. The flashlight and the camera are your primary tools; the flashlight enables you to spot concealed details and also helps to keep your fear down, while the camera allows you to record supernatural occurrences that you then have to examine in order to progress. A sanity meter shows how much disturbing content you have encountered; when your sanity is high, you can think clearly, but if it falls, it may happen that you see hallucinations, hear odd noises, or meet hostile spirits. You will visit five unpleasant sites: the Abandoned Lighthouse, the Dockside Warehouse, the Forgotten Church, the Overgrown Cemetery, and the Watcher’s Mansion. You may also like Joy Malignant.

In each of these areas, there are puzzles, diary entries, and tragic tales to be discovered. There is no combat—instead, the game makes use of stealth and evasion. Rather than having permadeath, it has an “echo” system which lets you restart the game while keeping the clues you have found.
