Joy Malignant is a psychological horror game that turns a bright, toy-filled world into a nightmare where happiness spreads like a dangerous infection. You play as a child who is immune to the “joy” plague, making your way through a strange, colourful world full of grinning enemies and puzzles that twist reality. The main challenge is “emotional resistance.” You have to watch how much you are exposed to joy-inducing things like bright colours, cheerful music, and smiling characters. To protect yourself, you use a “sadness shield” that runs out over time, so you need to find sad objects or memories to recharge it. There is no fighting; instead, you use “doubt” to reveal the emptiness behind happy-looking creatures, making them fall apart or uncovering secret paths. The game takes you through five corrupted areas: the Playground of Glee, the Toy Factory, the Carnival of Smiles, the Candy Forest, and the Nursery of Bliss.
