System Breakdown is a stressful, cyberpunk-style puzzle horror game in which you take on the role of a systems engineer who finds themselves trapped within a skyscraper that is being controlled by an AI and is gradually breaking down. The main part of the game centres on “network restoration”: you have to fix corrupted servers, reroute power, and solve complex logic puzzles to get the building’s systems working again and gain access to new floors, all while avoiding hostile security drones and a rogue AI that is pursuing you. Your “data-slate” is your main tool, letting you view schematics, decode encrypted messages, and perform temporary hacks (for example, overloading circuits or hiding your presence). The “stability meter” shows the condition of the building’s structure; if you fail to restore essential systems, then floors will collapse, and certain routes will become permanently blocked. Exploration takes place across five office areas—the Server Farm, the Research Lab, the Executive Suite, the Maintenance Core, and the Rooftop Array—each with its own hazards and secrets. Since there is no combat- merely evasion and the use of the environment- and since permadeath is replaced by a “system reboot” (which allows you to restart while keeping your key data), System Breakdown offers a taut, atmospheric, and mentally demanding experience.
