Hope Deferred lets players explore the broken mind of a grieving archivist who is locked in a sentient, decaying library. This setting acts as a memory playground and a story medium where players do emotional riddles and exploration to put together a very touching story. The main game loop depends on “emotive resonance,” where each book in the infinite shelves is a frozen memory. To find out its story, you need to match your emotional state by listening to ambient audio logs, studying personal effects (like a cracked locket, a half-burnt letter, a child’s drawing), or sitting on benches to induce introspection scenes, which also change the location’s color palette. The only thing that you can use is a “resonance lantern” that shows hidden text only when you bring it near certain items. (Different light frequencies, warm amber for joy, cool blue for sorrow, and flickering red for anger, bring out different memory layers, so you have to change emotions even during a puzzle.) The exploration is done via the “Library of Lost Things, ” namely, five separate areas (the Atrium of Absence, the Corridor of Regret, the Rotunda of Rupture, the Alcove of Acceptance, and the Crypt of Closure), which, taken together, are a metaphor for the grieving process. The puzzles have deep meanings: to fix a broken mirror, you need to find three “reflection shards” hidden in unrelated memories and line them up; to light the hearth again, you need to collect “embers of kindness” from nostalgia flashbacks. The “echo mechanic” gives you the option to leave voice memos for yourself (or for other players in asynchronous mode), which can be heard upon entering certain coordinates; these echoes, however, gradually degrade and turn into indistinct whispers.
