Bonehold is a bleak tactical roguelike. You are a necromancer who must command a bone-and-sinew fortress where tower defense, army management, and resource gathering intertwine for a very macabre and strategic gaming experience. The main game loop involves an “ossuary economy,” a concept in which you can only obtain bones to use as money by collecting them from defeated enemies. This will allow you not only to build defensive walls, towers, and traps, but also to raise the dead: zombies, skeletons, and large ones, which have different bone requirements and amounts. “Bonehold” represents a dynamic, growing fortress; not only will you improve its walls, but also be able to open new rooms (ritual circle, armory, crypt) and build more defenses to keep your fortress safe, as the waves of enemies grow stronger: holy knights, rogue mages, the beings of the heavens. Although the fighting takes its course, you are still able to plan and decide: you can order your minions along patrol paths, sequence traps, and even set specific super skills like “bone shatter” or “soul siphon” to certain units. The game takes you across the vast open-ended procedural world featuring five major environment types: The Ashen Fields, the Cursed Forest, the Salt Marshes, the Obsidian Plateau, and the Sunken Cathedral, which not only deliver their particular resources and enemies, but also present new environmental threats. “Dark Ritual”: A system that permits you to offer your own minions or even some of your resources as a sacrifice in exchange for unlocking a new permanent upgrade such as bone generation rate, faster building process, or new undead types and so on.
