Horripilant plunges gamers into a first-person folk horror dream where your own microphone input is turned into the main gameplay feature, mixing psychological terror with stealth that is based on reacting to sounds. The main focus is on “auditory exposure”; every sound you physically make (for example, a cough, a chair creaking, or a little curse) causes in-game “noise blooms” that alert the Hush-Walkers, blind humanoid monsters with super-sensitive ears that hunt by echolocation clicks. Silence is the key to survival, but at the same time, the game will not let you be quiet all the time: even breathing in the background can lead to small “panic spikes” that are shown as ice gradually spreading on the screen edges, and if you hold your breath for too long, your vision will become blurred and you will gasp involuntarily. Your only means of defense is a “dirge chime”, a cursed music box that can change the frequency of its notes; the high pitches lure the enemies into walls, the middle ones create fake footsteps, and the low frequencies deafen the Hush-Walkers temporarily but also cover your own sound cues. The adventuring is done at the “Marrow Estate, ” a Victorian manor that has been procedurally laid out, and the rooms are changing according to your level of fear. If your panic is high, the hallways become longer, door handles disappear, and mirrors show ghosts of empty chairs where there shouldn’t be any, just a few seconds ago.
