Ritter & Rotwein is an engaging and entertaining adventure game that is essentially story-driven. You’ll join a knight who’s not in high spirits and a squire who is always thinking about wine on their journey to a comically medieval kingdom. In this strange town, and with the assistance of absurd quests, political games, and vine-growing economics, you’ll help them find their destinies. The gameplay consists mainly of “vine cultivation”, i.e., planting, raising, and harvesting magical grapevines that yield special wines of healing, invisibility, or charm. This way, players have various ways of earning coins or completing various actions: either selling them to other characters, using them to uncover various puzzles, or even socialising with other characters with wine. The “reputation” or “fame” system tracks your popularity across three types of population: nobles, merchants, and peasants; giving someone the right sort of wine brings about their goodwill, but offering inferior wine will only expose you to mockery and have them turn their backs on you. The”duel system” resolves confrontations in a light-hearted manner through choosing rock-paper-scissors-type options, brawn, wit, or using wine persuasion for the dispute resolution victory. Traveling takes place in five lovely localities–the Vineyard Valley, the Cobblestone Keep, the Enchanted Forest, the Rustic Village, and the Dragon’s Peak–each containing weird characters, secret treasures, and side stories expanding the overall context. Different combinations of grape, wine type, and aging style give the wine a distinctive name and a special benefit. Multiplayer allows for a “wine auction” in which two players compete to sell their best vintage to the highest bidder.
