In the game Shift at Midnight, you become a night-shift security guard at a research facility in the middle of nowhere, where a terrible event tore reality apart. The game features psychological horror, puzzle solving, and stealth, all wrapped in a suspenseful, survival setting. You can move between two worlds, the Stable and Fractured, at any time. Stable looks normal, but it hides items and clues; Fractured is distorted, which opens up paths hidden to the normal eye, shows you enemies, and reveals what caused the anomaly. Your “stability gauge” measures mental clarity; spending too much time in the Fractured world leads to distorted senses and eventually, if the gauge drops, you get booted back into the Stable dimension and any progression not yet saved will be lost. A great feature is the “surveillance system, ” enabling you to keep watch at numerous places in the facility, identifying points with patrols, finding areas that could be weak, rescuing survivors or resources. As part of the “Midnight Facility, ” you have to explore a large, multilevel complex. There are five main sections: the Administrative Wing, the Containment Wing, the Research Wing, the Maintenance Tunnels, and the Sublevel Lab. “Memory fragments” allow you to get the story of why the facility collapsed through combining pieces of documents and recordings. “Multiplayer” isn’t offered, but “community ghost” features enable you to visualize other players’ activities. After “permadeath” is replaced by “anomaly reset, ” where you restart the shift but keep lore discoveries, Shift At Midnight becomes a chilling, mysterious journey through a disaster-causing reality-bending event.
