Tormentum II is a dark, surreal point-and-click adventure game that will immerse you in a nightmare realm, filled with hideously beautiful imagery and morally neutral situations where puzzles, atmosphere, and haunting decisions will define your journey. At the heart lies the “dream logic” puzzle gameplay. To get through the unearthly landscapes, you have to find hidden clues, use the weirdest items, combine them, and interpret obscure symbols. Each of your puzzles is connected to a nightmare’s internal logic; that’s why they are both challenging and rewarding when you find a solution just by being observant and thinking differently. With every horror scene and a morally dubious decision, your “sanity meter” decreases. When sanity runs low, subtle things happen: images start to warp, you hear whispers, and NPCs behave strangely. In each character interaction, you get a choice: you can be merciful, cruel, accept or reject the dark powers, etc. Each decision affects the way your character will evolve, and you will end the game if you choose one path rather than another. The main part of the story takes place in five twisted realms: The City of Flesh, The Garden of Bone, The Clockworks of the Abyss, The Mirrors Mire, and The Spire of Ash, each one a surreal scene painted by hand, populated with a variety of creatures, hidden stories, and the environment itself telling the story. The unique feature of the gameplay is the “sketchbook, ” a journal of sorts, where a character documents everything and collects evidence as they unravel the history of this world in parts. There’s no “multiplayer, ” but a feature called “community thoughts” allows other games to find and uncover reflections left by their fellow gamers. Tormentum II comes without “permadeath’ yet it includes “scarring” that visually reveals choices you’ve made in-game. It’s a beautiful yet eerie walk in the realm of the subconscious.
