Tears of Metal is a harsh, action-packed vehicle combat game set in a decrepit, post-apocalyptic environment. In fact, the setting is so broken and run-down that the whole game is just like playing with scrap metal vehicles against each other on broken concrete and gravel roads, to a large extent, with players relying only on their heavily customised and heavily armed vehicles. The main gameplay cycle is a “scrap economy”: you scavenge destroyed enemy vehicles and abandoned outposts for raw materials, which you use to enhance your vehicle’s armour, weapons, and engines. Each modification will affect your weight, speed, and firepower. Your “heat gauge” measures the temperature of your weapons; continuous shooting leads to overheating, and you have to switch between a machine gun, rocket launcher, and harpoon gun to maintain attack momentum. “Vehicle durability” mechanism shows how your vehicle is hit. As it turns out, it is more profitable to hit a tire, as that will prevent you from moving. If you hit the tank, there will be leakage, and the fuel will start pouring out. A destroyed weapon mount removes that weapon for life until the end of this match. Exploration includes travelling to five different biomes where the environment is torn and destroyed. These are as follows: the Ashen Flats, the Scorched Crater, the Petro-City Ruins, the Salt Flats, and the Iron Jungle; each has its own set of landscape features, environmental hazards, and salvage items which can be used for vehicle modifications. “Fury mode” is one of the game features in which you, as the driver, get rewarded for driving dangerously and aggressively, with a boost bar being gradually filled up, which you can activate for a short boost of higher speed and better damage at the expense of lower stability. “Multiplayer” features include a “wasteland royale” mode, which is a free-for-all type of battle where the goal is to become the last surviving team with only one vehicle standing. No permadeath is introduced in Tears of Metal. Instead, there is a “warlord status” that tracks your domination of the wasteland.
