In Criminally Yours, a narrative crime thriller, the player assumes the role of a somewhat ambiguous defense attorney in the morally ambiguous atmosphere of a slick, neon-noir city, where court manipulations, fabricated evidence, and intimidation of witnesses combine to create a tense legal thriller. Narrative “reconstruction” is the main game loop; at every trial, there are different and contradictory witness statements, the police reports, and the actual physical evidence. Rather than pursuing the absolute truth, you have to come up with a very persuasive alternative storyline that will raise the level of doubt in the minds of the jury. Your “credibility meter” will indicate how plausible your arguments are to the jury; i.e., presenting bona fide evidence would put more weight on your argument, whereas if you involve the prosecution with faked evidence such as photoshopped pictures, coerced affidavits, or planted fingerprints, then you may be left with complete ruin. “Witness prep” system is a way of preparation of witness for being in court and is done before trial in places such as parking garages which are dimly lit or abandoned warehouses; here, the options available to you are that you either bribe or threaten or charm witnesses into changing their statements, however, it should be kept in mind that every such method brings with it certain risks, e.g., bribed witnesses can be counter-offered by the prosecution, threatened witnesses may break down during testimony, and charmed witnesses might develop romantic infatuations with your character which, while being a bit inconvenient, they are still the results of the method used. “Exploration” takes place all over the “Five Precincts” (Commercial center of The Sprawl, Criminal underworld of The Warrens, Corporate penthouses of The Spire, Smuggling routes at The Docks, and Abandoned subway catacombs of The Hollow). In each of these locations, you can find vendors selling illegal evidence, corrupt police officers, and rival attorneys who will try to ruin your cases if you happen to cross them. “Jury profiling” allows one to look into the backgrounds of the jurors (their job, interests, political views) and then design the final argument in such a way that it touches on the specific prejudices of each of them.
