In Aviary Attorney, players become lawyers defending the innocent and proving the truth is hidden in those who lie the most. They choose an almost criminal lawyer, Jayjay Falcon, to be their character in 1848 Paris while they read the story of a visual novel, do the puzzles of reasoning in the trial, and see bird characters wearing clothes, which all come together in making a legal drama with humor, yet being one that really makes you think. The most important activity during the game consists of “evidence triage”; each case reveals to you the crime scene locations (dodgy taverns, aristocratic ballrooms, fog-shrouded docks) where you send your crazy assistant, Sparrowson, to investigate while you do witness interrogations. Time is a limited resource; you have only three days per case to collect testimonies, physical evidence, and character alibis, but if you decide on one location, then the others are permanently closed to you, so you must make the most difficult decision of prioritizing. The trial parts happen by playing a kind of game called “logic-stacking”, you show a series of evidence cards to the court in order to prove that witnesses are lying, but if you accuse someone wrongly, the magistrate will lower your “reputation meter” by clapping the gavel. Loss of reputation results in immediate conviction, followed by executions depicted in a darkly humorous way (a guillotine, a firing squad, or, in the case of bird defendants, a big cat). The “moral alignment” feature helps to decide whether to defend clients by finding legal loopholes, making emotional pleas, or even bribing the opposing side, which changes the dialogue options of Jayjay and the cases available to him. The plot in each of the nine chapters is divided into two parts, and the people who are released from the court may come back as friends or enemies in subsequent episodes. The “sketch artist” feature allows you to make courtroom drawings, which, if they properly show significant moments, can be used as emotional arguments. When permadeath is changed to “disbarment” (starting a New Game+ with only half the reputation of the previous game), every objection is a question of whether to respond with humorous remarks or with quite sharp arguments, this way turning Aviary Attorney into a feathered, French Revolution-era comedy of justice, jesters, and jailbreak.
