NO ENTRY is a psychological horror-stealth game from the first-person perspective, following Elias Vance, an urban explorer who has fallen from favour, as he breaks into the deserted Blackwater Asylum to obtain photographic proof of its infamous history, only to realize that the building is not empty and that some force within it will not allow him to leave. The game focuses on silent survival and environmental puzzles, with the goal not to fight but to evade, hide, and outwit the malevolent entities moving through the asylum’s deteriorating corridors.

The player moves through a large, non-linear complex made up of five separate wings—Administration, Ward, Surgical, Mortuary, and Sub-basement—each with its own dangers, locked corridors, and paranormal occurrences. The game’s focus, the “NO ENTRY”, appears as glowing red symbols on certain doors and passages; if the player enters any of these areas, they immediately elicit an aggressive response from the game’s main antagonist, a shapeshifting being called The Warden, which forces the player to remember the safe paths and take every action with extreme caution.

In NO ENTRY advancement, the player must maintain a fine balance between managing light, exercising sound discipline, and watching the sanity meter decline. The player has a vintage flashlight powered by a crank and is the only dependable light source, but using it too much drains its battery, and cranking it makes a noise that draws nearby creatures. Likewise, running, stepping on broken glass, or knocking over debris causes sound pings that notify The Warden and its smaller allies—the Shamblers—of your presence, which means that players have to crouch-walk, time their movements to the ambient thunder or the dripping of water, and use throwable objects to make distractions.

The sanity meter falls whenever the player witnesses supernatural occurrences, looks at The Warden for a long time, or stays in total darkness for a long period; as sanity decreases, visual and auditory hallucinations become more severe—walls start to bleed, doorways move around, and whispers lead the player into dead ends. Players can restore sanity by finding and drinking rare ‘memory vials’ scattered around the asylum, or by entering designated safe rooms with working locks, where they can take a brief break and save their progress.
