Dead​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Space 3 stepped outside of the usual series formula in a big way by adding more action-oriented elements and a new crafting system for the weapons, thereby changing the gameplay to a survival-action shooter with some elements of horror mixed in. Most of the gameplay revolves around dismemberment, but now there is a very customizable weapon crafting bench that supports the combat side, where the players can collect the parts and the resources and make a brand new weapon by combining two already existing ones, for instance, a plasma cutter having an under-slung force gun or a military rifle having an electric charge module.

In this method, which is basically the main character’s replacement for the usual weapon pickups, players are invited to the exploration of the frozen planet Tau Volantis and derelict ships, where they can find rare upgrade materials and circuits to finish their crafts. Also, the seamless drop-in/drop-out cooperative mode, the second player taking the role of John Carver, whose madness is shown only through co-op exclusive missions and hallucinations that only he then experiences, is a new psychological tension layer in the partnership, which is added as a characterization. The game by itself is full of action, but the developers tried to preserve its horror roots by immersing the players in an ice-blown and oppressive environment of Tau Volantis and in the tight spaces full of corpses of ancient alien ruins. The enemy design also brings an array of new enemies, such as the “Feeder” variants that are very agile and the enormous, troll-like “Snowbeasts” that will force the player to develop a new strategy for them and, also, to make effective use of the newly introduced roll-dodge mechanic. The campaign structure is less linear and features the optional side missions that explore the backstory of the Sovereign Colonies and give players advanced crafting blueprints as loot. Resource gathering and the human enemy firefights, which were a major change from the pure survival horror of the first game, Dead Space 3, are a different kind of game now, one of cooperative survival, desperate scavenging, weapon engineering, and fighting overwhelming odds on a hostile alien ​‍​‌‍​‍‌world.
