Dead​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Space 2 impressively transforms the series’ formula by bringing more action that is still very much survival-horror at heart, hence resulting in an experience that is not only more varied but also deeply unsettling on a psychological level. The central mechanic of the game – dismemberment – is done in a quicker and bloodier manner with the player character Isaac Clarke now being a bit more agile and able to do things such as melee kills that are context-sensitive and use the new telekinetic weapon like the deadly “Javelin Gun.” The reason why this upgraded movement is so important is that it allows the player to keep up with the huge, frenzied Necromorph groups that attack the Sprawl space station from where they can also enter through ventilation shafts and ceilings at a terrifyingly quick pace.

The game works great on the levels of the player’s foresight by means of its dreaded “eye surgery” moment and other immersive horror instances, in which the player is both startled by the quick-time events falling in line with dismemberment mechanics thus creating a new level of horror that is not only psychologically torturous but also requites physically strong characters, which in turn makes the whole experience a direct attack on the sanity of both the protagonist Isaac and the player. Besides the combat mechanics overhaul, Dead Space 2 also has more levels to explore and has the characters’ narrative more intertwined than before, showing a more vocal and developed Isaac Clarke who, apart from fighting the Necromorphs, is struggling with his traumatic memories from the Ishimura incident. The Sprawl is not only bigger but also a much more complex and interconnected location than the first game, where amongst the horror and the atmosphere of desolation there are places like a church unit that has been heavily damaged or a school sector that is eerily quiet, both of which through their peacefulness serve as a stark contrast to the industrial horror and also enhance the feeling of the tragic. The title takes advantage of the presence of the protagonist to introduce a comprehensive weapon upgrade system and a new “Specials” category for gadgets like the “Ripper” that can be detached from the player while still going on with the tense resource management from the original. By also including a deep and unexpectedly varied multiplayer mode and a grinding “Hardcore” mode—where players are allowed only three saves in the entire game—Dead Space 2 is a perfectly balanced cocktail of fast pulse-pounding action, horror that requires the use of strategy, and narrative that has great depth and is at the summit of the ​‍​‌‍​‍‌genre.
