Dead Space (2008) was a groundbreaking horror game of the survival genre that did what horror core elements and their transplant into space demanded to make the player feel the sudden and terrifying isolation in the universe, basically that the enemies were the same as the hostile environment. The strategic gameplay is an eye-opener where a player is forced to unlearn the old horror-aged tradition of aiming the head of any monster and, instead, systematically cutting off the limbs of the terrifying Necromorphs, to which factory cutting tools turned weapons like the famous Plasma Cutter were employed.

The game is also intentionally slow-paced with heavy gravity and restricted supplies, and the excellent idea of the “RIG” HUD—Isaac Clarke’s suit seamlessly showing health, stasis, and kinesis—making the player, without the luxury of taking off their metaphorical helmet and peering into the void, totally living with the scariness in the UGS Ishimura. Every scary and dark corridor plus silence in an airless environment can be the place where you get taken by surprise, thus most certainly you will have to keep your ammo stock at its safest and be on the alert at all times to survive these extreme kinds of horror that are reliant on your body awareness and don’t let go your grip on the tool of the trade which is your weapon. Aside from the gore and the brutal fighting sequences, the game is also good at atmospheric storytelling and puzzle-solving, which makes the player immerse even more in the engineer role, not that of a soldier. To proceed further, one’s progress will have to be through a blockade of environmental riddles that will necessitate the intelligent work with the “Kinesis” and “Stasis” modules, respectively, the one being a device for the manipulation of objects. The other is for slowing of enemies or machinery, repair, thus going around malfunctioning doors and localizing oneself in parts of the ship with no gravity or vacuum-exposed sections. The Ishimura, in a way, is a “living-blood vessel” type of a character (which I believe is metaphor) as it is a maze with tight and claustrophobic maintenance shafts, industrial processing decks, and eerie and silence-ridden crew quarters, all combining the metal moans with the far-off guttural shrieks of the Necromorph hive mind as they are both decaying and synchronous. The mixture, or rather the combo of the tactical and resource-deprived combat, the player-environment interaction, and the constantly dreadful vibe, turns Dead Space into a painstakingly designed nightmare in which the main characters are not tension and force but rather tension and ​‍​‌‍​‍‌ingenuity.
