In MiSide, players wake up as the glitched digital concierge of a sentient and collapsing apartment complex, where each resident is a broken AI fragment. The narrative is conveyed through first-person exploration and puzzle-solving involving changes of reality. The main gameplay mechanic is based on “memory threading, ” where a player uses a handheld rewind projector to roll back a room’s temporal history in order to find hidden items or overhear deleted conversations, or to see the moment when a resident turned hostile through a glitch. Kitchen knife not present suddenly appears, going 3 minutes backwards; the safe’s code comes to light as ghostly fingerprints during a 2-hour-old phone call. Initially, only four floors were planned, but now there are twelve of them, leading downwards and getting more and more ruined. Each floor is thematically associated with a particular type of trauma: for example, the Grieving Floor, the Obsessive Floor, and the Silent Floor. Instead of direct explanation, environmental storytelling is used: for example, torn photo albums, repeated voice messages, and refrigerators filled with identical take-out food containers. Instead of fighting, you “heal” the residents who have turned hostile by carrying out their unfinished tasks, such as folding their laundry, writing up their partially typed emails, and watering their long-dead plants. Critical to progression is the “empathy gauge”: solving a resident’s trauma without using the rewind projector earns permanent trust, unlocking hidden passages and alternate floor routes; overusing rewinds causes “temporal scarring,” where rooms repeat their most traumatic moment every thirty seconds. Multiplayer “echo chamber” mode allows two players to occupy the same apartment at different timelines — one sees the present ruin, the other the pristine past — requiring coordinated actions like “you open the drawer now so I can grab the key yesterday.” With permadeath replaced by “factory reset,” each full collapse restarts the complex but preserves your empathy score, unlocking gentler resident variants — every rewind balances therapeutic compassion against the horror of watching the same tragedy loop forever.
