In Approaching Infinity, players take control of a starship that can be customized and are tasked with navigating a procedurally generated, hostile galaxy where turn-based combat, thorough crew management, and open-ended exploration are combined in a difficult spacefaring roguelike. The main gameplay revolves around “mission board diversification”, selecting contracts from five faction hubs (the militaristic Terran Accord, the mercenary Free Traders, the xenophilic Church of the Void, the corporate Octopus Conglomerate, and the insectoid Slissik Hive), each giving different rewards, such as shielded hull plating, biological weaponry, or cloaking devices. Combat is carried out on a hexagonal grid where the positioning of the ships is very important: for example, hiding behind a rock provides cover while being in the middle of an ion storm reduces the ability to get sensor lock; and the twelve different ship classes, from quick interceptors to very slow dreadnoughts, come with weapon slots where you need to allocate power between shields, engines, and weapons manually. Crew management features permadeath for officers, while each one has procedurally generated traits (e.g., a paranoid engineer who can boost reactor power but also sets off false alarms, or a xenobiologist who can pacify alien boarders but also refuses to shoot at “sentient” lifeforms). Exploration changes over 1, 000+ handcrafted star systems, but “deep space anomalies” create unlimited variety, abandoned stations with loot-filled cargo bays, living asteroids that hatch swarmers if mined, and temporal rifts that clone your ship into a hostile mirror. The system of “situational awareness” substitutes minimaps with sensor pings that only approximate enemy positions, hence you have to make well-informed guesses on missile strikes. Having permadeath punish you for hull destruction, yet at the same time allowing you to unlock “legacy blueprints” for your next attempts, each hyperdrive jump is a decision between accumulating resources and being tempted by the uncharted and deadly nebulae.
