In Banner of the Maid, participants of the game manage the tactics of a turn-based war, depicting a different French Revolution that still includes foot soldiers, horse riders, cannons, and the fierce zealots. Still, the battle system is mainly based on a strict triangle unit balance. The battle, however, is based on the adjacency “morale surge” system. For example, placing Pauline Bonaparte next to other characters results in a series of confidence buffs that lead to her obtaining combat abilities such as covering fire, emergency reloads, and formation resilience. Every aspect of the terrain changes the nature of the battle: for instance, farmhouses provide a defensive cover; if soldiers are charging uphill, their targeting accuracy is compromised for impact; also, urban alleys allow for surrounding and ambushing the enemies. The “war council” between the fights initiates the decision-making aspect of the game by giving players options of different factions (royalists offering elite cavalry, radicals experimental artillery) that not only give new missions but also change officers’ loyalty. The fallen soldiers are permadeath, yet their “battlefield heirlooms” -a weapon or trinket- are inherited by the adjacent soldiers, thus a new storyline of sacrifice and legacy gets woven. The final boss fights come with “duel challenges, ” a mini-game based on parry, where Pauline’s well-timed counterattacks not only help in the duel but also raise the global army morale. Due to the campaigns being multibranched and shaped by the choices to help or betray historical characters like Robespierre or Lafayette, the movement of a character on every grid square spot requires balancing tactical accuracy and revolutionary fervor.
