In Outlast: Whistleblower DLC, you play as Waylon Park, a quiet software engineer, who gets locked in the madhouse of Mount Massive Asylum, where helpless stealth, body horror, and psychological breakdowns merge into a prequel full of intense fear. The main idea to keep the player hooked is camcorder dependency; that is, the player has a night-vision camcorder, which is the only tool and has a limited battery, so one has to decide whether to walk unthinkingly through the dark or expose the dreadful things by giving out one’s breath sounds that attract the monsters along the way. Besides that, unlike the main character in the base game who was a journalist, Waylon can not keep enemies at bay for a long time by running; thus, you need to make use of the asylum’s “environmental clutter” (by knocking over a gurney to make a noise, slamming a door, or turning on the sprinklers to hide the sound of your footsteps) and learn the unique tells of the stalkers for example, the Groom’s humming indicates that he is about to appear, Frank Manera’s whispers through vents happen a few minutes before his cannibal lunge, and Eddie Gluskin’s “wedding planning” monologues herald the entrances of patrol zones with ribbons hanging. Exploration changes player location to three ever-more horrific biomes: Vocational Block (industrial kitchens with meat hooks, conveyor belt presses), Rehabilitation Wing (physical therapy rooms where patients were strapped into bone-crushing machines), and Rooftop Gauntlet (open-air scaffolding where Gluskin’s less fortunate “brides” are hanging from weather vanes). One cannot totally move forward without the “trauma imprint” system, every time there is a major chase, Waylon’s movements get changed forever (he limps after he is hit on the leg, his shaking hands make him very slow while opening/closing doors, the vision gets blurred after he gets a head knock), also some hidespots are not as good as new ones so that’s why closet doors can be heard creaking or under-bed dust clouds can trigger coughs.
