God of War (62 GB) takes the hack-and-slash genre and turns it into a personal journey. It is an over-the-shoulder adventure, through the wilds of Norse mythology, that is filled with myths. Instead of the Blades of Chaos, the Leviathan Axe’s heavy throwing and elemental frost features are the new instruments of brutal, calculated combat for Kratos. The gameplay beautifully mirrors the changing mood of the father-son relationship; at one time, you are playing Kratos in real-time, and at the same time, you can send Atreus with a single button to shoot enemies. This creates an incredibly smooth cooperation where the boy’s arrows can stagger enemies, open them for a powerful runic attack, or even reveal a secret path with his ability to read ancient Norse. The combat system is not easy, as it calls for the player to have a tactical genius that can keep the Leviathan Axe’s slow, heavy, throw-and-recall sound against the comeback of the Blades of Chaos for the control of the crowd. Each weapon has its own complete skill trees, customizable runic attacks, and the upgrades found everywhere throughout the sprawling, interconnected realms.
