Delta Force 1 was the first game to use the concept of the tactical military shooter genre. Long before it had competitors, it used huge, open terrains and true-to-life ballistics to give its players a raw and unforgiving combat experience that focused on strategic planning rather than rapid reaction. The huge, realistically scaled maps of the world, from snow-covered mountains to thick forests, were the setting for the game. The main idea of the game was the non-linear performance of the missions, where players combined the gameplay element topography to approach a target from different angles by using the terrain for long-range shooting, stealthy infiltration, or coordinated squad assaults with AI teammates.

The game’s standout feature definitely was its bullet physics that took into account the descend of the bullet due to gravity, the drift caused by the wind, and even the breaking of the air by the supersonic rounds, and consequently, every confrontation was to be carefully planned like a sharpshooter’s and the player’s patience in waiting was tested, rather than it being a quick one where players used up their ammo and hoped one of the bullets would hit the target.

Besides that, six lives, where you had no health regeneration, very few save spots, and a minimalist HUD that gave no enemy markers or crosshairs thus all your survival depended on stealthy careful movements, smart use of your cover, and getting at least decent with the art of camouflage in areas where one single shot that was off just slightly could not only unmask you but also alert a bunch of warriors at the same time.

This combination of sandbox/stage freedom, real-world/simulation-grade accuracy, and tense and lonely combat made this game a spec-ops fantasy that was not really a game but something that was a desperate battle for survival behind enemy lines.
