The Gex Trilogy, which includes Gex (1995), Gex: Enter the Gecko (1998), and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko (1999), is a colorful and funny platforming adventure with a distinctive mix of exploration, fighting, and parody of pop culture. Gamers take control of Gex, a one-line-speaking gecko that cleverly moves through bizarre TV-themed worlds—such as horror movies, and kung-fu flicks—all of them having different visual styles and mechanics. Across the trilogy, the gameplay progresses from the slow, more deliberate 2D platforming of the original Gex to the faster, 3D collect-a-thons of Enter the Gecko and Deep Cover Gecko. Gex’s typical moves, like tail whips, wall-climbing, and high jumps, are still available.

At the same time, newer games introduce vehicles and power-ups like the freeze breath. All the stages are full of not only hidden remotes (in this case, keys), secret places, and funny NPCs, but also of rewards for those who explore deeply. Boss fights are highly clever in their connection to the theme of each world; for example, the big vampire or the robotic game show host can be the one you fight. In terms of superb writing, diversified gameplay, and nostalgia, the Gex Trilogy is the most innovative and most creative reuse of the mascot platformer in the last era of such games.
