Dead Weight is a tense physics-based puzzle-platformer game where the player assumes the role of a condemned soul connected to a large otherworldly anchor. Weight management, manipulation of the environment, and precise timing are combined to deliver a beautifully haunting gameplay experience. The fundamental gameplay loop is based on “anchor dynamics,” i.e., you have to pull, swing, and carry your massive anchor along dangerous trails where the inertia of the anchor can be put to good use by breaking things, activating plates, or killing enemies. However, you also need to control its dragging, as falling into the abysses is the last thing you want to do. The so-called “gravity tether” is at your disposal for a very brief time period, during which it allows you to reduce the anchor’s weight, thereby giving you the freedom to jump and move in the air, yet every use of it comes at the cost of your limited energy supply that slowly runs out. The “chain link” system allows the player to hook up the anchor to the designated hooks to create ziplines, counterweights, or even bridges to overcome environmental puzzles. Five distinct realms, such as a desolate wasteland, a watery church, a maze of iron, a dizzying tower, and a bottomless abyss, serve as stages for exploration. Players are encouraged to seek out hidden relics, to get through hazardous locations, and to find remnants of haunting old stories in each of the realms to get more out of the game experience. One of the systems that makes exploration interesting in Deadweight is “echo fragments.” They allow you to get clues on where to go for exploration rewards by gathering memories scattered around different areas, which will eventually help you to figure out how you came to be in the predicament you are in and your bond with the anchor. The game does not have an official multiplayer system; however, there is “shadow echoes,” which enables players to spot ghosts of previous game runs, which might contain helpful information, like hinting at the way or warning you of the danger. If you die in this game, you’ll have to start all your progress from scratch unless you are lucky with the game mechanic.
