Gurei is a deeply moving, story-driven game that puts you at the center of an amnesic warrior’s shattered memories, bound to a powerful, ancient, sentient mask. Through a compelling mix of atmospheric exploration, touching puzzle-solving, and a poetic combat system, the journey becomes a truly immersive experience. The main gameplay idea is “mask switching”: you can switch between three different masks: the “Mask of Solitude” for stealth mode and surveillance, the “Mask of Fury” for the most brutal fighting, and the “Mask of Sorrow” for healing and manipulating the environment. Besides the appearance, each mask also provides unique abilities, and even NPCs react differently to you. Some puzzles you must use only one of the masks to pass. Through your “memory shard” system, as a player, you will receive collectible fragments of memorized scenes that reveal more of the warrior’s tragic past and his connection to the mask’s origin. The combat in the game gives you the chance for a deep understanding of all the nuances; it is a combination of parries, dodges, and “momentum”, that is, consecutive hits increase the combo potential of a character and lead to “mask surge” when the area-of-effect powers go wild. Exploration is mainly concentrated on the “Land of Whispers”, which is a large, lonely world divided into five regions (Sunken Temple, Whispering Woods, Ashen Battlefield, Crystal Grotto, and Mask Forge). “The bond system” measures how close you are to the mask; a powerful bond will open up a new set of abilities and the secret endings as well. Multiplayer mode is called a “shadow duel”, in which two masked warrior players fight each other. Since there is absolutely no possibility of dying, the game only has a “memory completion”/progress bar, which, in Gurei, makes a very poetic, touching journey towards identity and redemption.
