In Crimson Oath, players start the game as a knight fallen to a curse, one whose soul they are now bound with, with blood-fueled Soulslike combat, desolate, grim exploration, and a branching story of redemption blending together into a bleak, brutal game of action-RPG. The main loop is based around the feature “crimson exchange, ” through which you wield a sentient greatsword that absorbs your health and then attacks with deadly “blood arts” (a combination of flametornado slashes for a fire type, a life-depleting stab for the healing type, and shadow dashes for an avoidance type), leaving you in a state where each use will cost you a part of your life essence. The “oath meter” is a tool of the curse’s demands that records your commitment: if you perform a blood art, you get it increased to the maximum, unlocking stronger moves; however, allowing your oath meter to get overfilled leads your sword to control you in “the hunger” state. In battle, actions are planned with the aim of getting through to the core of the enemy after identifying their moves and the pattern of their attack; at the same time, the enemy will be draining your stamina, and it will require stamina management. You go through the “Ashen Kingdom, ” a fallen, highly connected world composed of 5 different areas: the Weeping Cathedral, the Sunken Crypts, the Searing Marshes, the Frozen Bastion, and the Obsidian Keep. Each of these regions is full of secret paths, storyboards, and challenging bosses. The system named “blood echo” lets players collect a piece of their fallen companions that might be traded to change weapons, armor, and gear in general. “Choices” influence the narrative: one can stand up to the curse, live a harmless and peaceful life, or yield to it, which will lead to dark forms of transformation being unlocked. “Multiplayer” mode features “ghost echoes”, asynchronous, which depict other players’ ways of demise, and there is also cooperative mode support for two players. The game is more about the narrative than the character death being final, but even without that factor, there would be changes that would result from playing the game, such as the “corruption” permanently altering one’s appearance and abilities of a character, which are there for everyone.
