Nophenia is a game where one is invited to enter the mind of a patient who is stuck in a lucid dream, and where one can experience psychological, reality-warping puzzles, and story-based exploration come together to form something very strange, very haunting. As players go through the main cycle of game activities, they will constantly “fragment memories, ” which means that they have to explore corrupted memories and put together personal objects, audio logs, and obscure letters to piece together the chronological story underlying the patient’s trauma, thereby revealing the reason behind the patient’s condition. All memory levels are abstract settings that constantly change: imagine a school corridor that has no end, a forest made up of furniture on fire, or a hospital that reconfigures itself as you move through it. The so-called “anchoring system” is your only means of survival: you can set up temporary beacons at key positions in an environment, which helps stabilize the scene and prevent it from changing, while at the same time, your “anchor” resource decreases. The “recall ability” allows you briefly to perceive the “true” version of a room that may reveal a secret door or a clue that you would otherwise overlook; however, its use reduces mental stability. The gameplay involves six different “memory strata”: the Nursery, the Dormitory, the Ward, the Chapel, the Laboratory, and the Abyss, each of them representing a particular stage in the patient’s life, together with the traumas that went with those stages. The “stability meter” measures how stable and aware your mind is; if you remain too long exposed to frightening situations or overuse recall, distortions in vision and sounds will increase until you reach a “fracture, ” a state where the only way out is to solve a reaction test quickly; otherwise, you might become locked in a dream cycle forever. “Echoes” refer to light ghosts of movements you have made earlier. These ghostly figures may serve as hints or warnings.
