Players in Hunting Unlimited 2008 take on a worldwide hunting circuit, bigger than the one of the previous game, spread over five new continents where better animal AI, changing weather systems, and a large collection of over 30 licensed guns come together for a simulation that is easier to understand but still quite challenging. The main game loop is based on “zone pressure.” Each area you hunt will keep track of your level of disturbance; shooting or even leaving your scent will raise the pressure, which makes the animals make changes like altering their migration routes, becoming nocturnal, or totally leaving the area for several days in the game. The new “spot-and-stalk” system with binocular tagging: when you tag an animal from a distance, it’ll not only show you the animal’s trophy score and gender, but also a “nervousness meter” that goes up as you get close, and at 80%, the animal runs away unless you are hidden by terrain. Gun condition affects shooting: if you shoot more than 100 rounds without cleaning your gun at your camp, inaccuracies will start to be introduced randomly, and scopes can fog up in humid rainforest areas or frost up in arctic tundra areas. Tracking an animal also gets a “blood smear analysis”, a glance at the blood lets you know what most likely was hit (bright frothy blood means lung, dark trickle is probably gut), and also the rough distance the animal can run after getting wounded until it collapses. “Predator defense” feature gets bigger: wolves hunt in a manner that mimics real-life packs, they surround your location, and if you end up attacking one, the others will come from behind and try to get you; bears can also do a vehicle charge, and you will have to shoot them from a rocking gun rest. Multiplayer’s “guide mode” allows a veteran player to lead up to three amateurs by sharing their trophy tags and earning extra points when the students are successful in their kills. “Career mode” brings a fame system with outfitters; if you do not recover wounded animals, you will lower your rating, which results in less access to private lands and premium hunt zones. With winds that can change direction unexpectedly while you are stalking, you have to reposition yourself constantly. It is exciting because it is a challenge that we face in real life too, but at the same time, it is fun because the game has been polished over the years, so hunting mechanics really are like a perfect balance between the two.
