In Hunting Unlimited 1, you play as a lone hunter who spends his days stalking wild game over large wilderness areas of North America. You deal with the challenge of realistic animal AI, as well as using the wind to mask your movements and taking into account the ballistics of your weapon; together, these elements result in a very methodical simulation of a hunt. The main activity is basically managing a “tracking meter”, you get to look for signs of the animals (the freshest droppings, freshly broken twigs, blood trails from the wounded animals) that are marked on a compass in the HUD which fills up as you continue hunting; if you let the meter go down by moving too fast or making too much noise, you’ll have to try and find the trail again from scratch. Animals behave on a 24-hour basis schedule: for example, whitetail deer feed on the grass of open fields very early in the morning, they lie down for their rest in dense shrubs in the middle of the day, and then in the evening, they go to the water sources. You get to see your scent cone as a semi-transparent layer; getting and staying downwind is very important because deer can smell humans from as far as 200 meters, and that is when they let out a warning snort and run away with the herd. For weapons, you have at your disposal bolt-action rifles, compound bows, and black powder muskets. Each weapon realistically accounts for bullet drop and wind deflection; for example, a .30-06 bullet at 150 meters will be blown sideways 3 inches by a 10 mph crosswind, which is a strong enough reason for the shooter to start thinking about holdover. The “vital organ” hit system makes it so that being patient is really beneficial: for example, a lung shot will kill the animal within 50 meters, a heart shot within 10, while a gut shot leaves the animal bleeding and causes time-consuming tracking to follow it because it bleeds slowly. “Hunter sense” mode (you can only activate it a limited number of times per expedition) reveals recent tracks and faraway animal sounds. Still, it also reduces the sharpness of your peripheral vision, which makes you more susceptible to attacks from predators like bears that may suddenly rush out of a thicket. The multiplayer “field contest” mode evaluates each player’s harvested animal by species, weight, antler spread, and shot placement.
