Players of Subway Builder take the role of a big boss of transit building who dreams of designing and maintaining an underground rail network in a sprawling, procedurally generated city. The game loop is “station placement”-centric, where you need to dig out tunnels, set tracks, and link up residential/commercial and industrial districts, each requiring different passenger flows, at the expense of a grid-layout system you can build both straight-through and curved tunnels with. The “train team” you have to be able to customize as well; each train provides different stats of speed, capacity, and reliability, and you are supposed to keep up with schedules, assign crew, and optimize train routes. “Budget system” follows your money; to open new parts, you need a mix of ticket income, subsidies, and loans. There are also random events such as strikes, accidents, or economic booms that may impact your profit/loss. You will explore around five different neighborhoods of the city: the City Center, the old quarters, the Waterside, the Suburban Area, and the High-Tech District, which will each have a different level of crowd density, pattern of traffic flow, and potential for development. The “Upgrade Menu” allows you to purchase such new infrastructure as express tracks, driverless trains, and subways with shops, each of which will give you an operational edge or a way to make more money besides. “Multiplayer” includes a “rival companies” version: two people play against each other for who gets the most passengers in the shared city.
