In Red Light, players become Max, a despondent survivor on an agonizing quest for his missing brother, whose last seen place leads to an abandoned Soviet R&D Institute, which has now come to house a nightmarish labyrinth of mercenary patrols and gruesome bioweapon experiments. The main gameplay mechanics are around “scavenger survival.” You’ll carefully search various sections of the institute’s crumbling buildings, labs, and containment cells for items such as food, water, ammunition, and medical supplies while avoiding or encountering hostile enemies ranging from heavily armed mercenary soldiers to freaky creatures that have been the result of failed experiments. Each level takes you lower and lower into the tunnels, telling stories through environmental details that show the history of the facility via scraps of paper, audio logs, and weird visual cues. Combat is both tactical and dependent upon the player’s resourcefulness: it is possible to fight enemies directly by using different types of firearms and melee blades, but weapons’ reserves are limited, and injuries necessitate good wound care, use of bandages, painkillers, and antiseptics to prevent infections and restore stamina. You also get a chance to work on the “gear upgrade” by modifying your weapons, armor, and other equipment with components obtained from the caches that are hidden, thereby significantly raising your probability of surviving during ever more perilous confrontations. Your way underground is interrupted by boss battles that you can’t ignore; each boss demands the recognition of the pattern, the knowledge of the environment, and the clever usage of the consumables.
