S.A.N.D.Y. – Beach Cleaner is an environmental game where players become a robotic environmentalist aiming to clean up polluted beach areas. In these areas, players have to deal with waste management, carrying out eco-restoration activities, and managing time while facing the challenges that are part of a simulation. The main activity of the gameplay is “waste sorting”; players roam around different procedurally generated shorelines, equipped with a scanner vacuum backpack to gather litter (plastics, glass, metals, and organics). However, the collected waste must be sorted into the appropriate recycling bins to earn more points and avoid contamination penalties. Players’ movements and scanning capabilities are powered by an “energy core”; constant running depletes it fast, and players have to recharge at solar stations scattered all over the map. Each beach is assigned a “pollution index,” which gradually goes down as the players do the cleaning. As a result, new areas get unlocked and previously hidden ecosystems get revealed. Through the “wildlife rescue” system, you are prompted to help animals that are tangled up (seagulls, turtles, seals). There are five different lines of beaches in the game to be explored (Tourist Beach, Rocky Cove, Mangrove Shore, Industrial Docks, and Coral Atoll), with each having its own type of trash and environmental dangers like oil slicks, rusty, sharp objects, or quicksand. The “tide cycle” is a feature of the game that shows water level changes that occur in real-time and sometimes submerge certain areas, which could either limit your access or lead to the discovery of sunken garbage. The “upgrade mechanics” feature also stays with the players as they have the option to increase the power of their vacuum’s suction, their scanning range, or their battery efficiency by spending their collected recyclable credits.
