ROUTINE​‍​‌‍​‍‌ conveys an intense horror theme of survival, which takes place on a lunar station that is abandoned. It is a game that is quite tense due to Permadeath and a Minimalist HUD Design, and this tension builds through environmental storytelling and diegetic interfaces. The players in the game are given the themes of the Retro-Futuristic Technology System, through which they must operate cassette-based data recorders, vector display terminals, and analogue security grids to solve puzzles and reveal the tragic history of the station. The game features a highly advanced Dynamic Sound Propagation Model that allows sounds to be perceived in a vacuum of low gravity and in a pressurised environment, where they behave differently. Thereby providing a very important layer of spatial awareness and threat detection. Additionally, the game’s Non-Linear Station Exploration gives players freedom of choice regarding their path through the interconnected modules. Besides locked doors and hazards they will encounter, they will have to use the salvaged tools creatively, such as the multi-tool for hacking and the motion tracker for detecting invisible entities, to get through the situations.
