Quarantine​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Zone: The Last Check puts players in a heart-pounding situation of a military inspector at Earth’s last human frontier outpost, excellently combining high-stakes procedural investigation with psychological horror and fast tactical plays. The main gameplay loop is a tense, systemic cycle of checking the barely existent, often contradictory stories of refugees and soldiers, by a highly interactive terminal which is used to cross-reference biometric data, travel manifests, and medical reports for discrepancies, while visually inspecting vehicles and people through a surveillance lens for signs of drug smuggling or parasitic infection. This thorough examination is, however, violently interrupted by sudden attacks of a group of “Breach Events” where the perimeter mutants break the security, thus the player has to temporarily forget the investigation and face the operator in a first-person shoot-out game, using ammunition wisely, sealing the doors, and so on, to stop the chaos. The decisions you make are of a deplorable nature: letting an infected one in might result in an outbreak in your own house, at the same time, a clean family turned away may haunt you forever and cast a gloom over the outpost. All this is being recorded by a dynamic “Protocol vs. Humanity” meter that unveils various narrative ​‍​‌‍​‍‌outcomes. The oppressive atmosphere is compounded by a deteriorating sanity system, where prolonged exposure to the horrors beyond the wall and the moral weight of your judgments begin to warp your perception, introducing visual and auditory hallucinations that blur the line between real threat and psychological breakdown.
