In Oxygen Not Included, the player controls a colony of AI-created clones—duplicates who are stranded on a randomly generated asteroid. The main play is about resource management, where the player must provide his colony facilities with resources and oxygen to survive in an expressed hostile environment. Every choice— every moving or building of excavations and extraction of resources, oxygen diffusers, and water purifiers— is consequential. It comes with its layers, filled with delicate challenges such as breathing mines, certain geyser areas, and certain dangerous biomes of heat or toxic gasses. Difficulty increases along with the colony’s growth because additional problems require solutions; colony members deal with food and waste problems as well as temperature regulation, while colonists venture farther into the asteroid.

At the core of Oxygen Not Included are systems and their interactions with each other, as well as with the players.
