In Moldwasher, players become a biohazard sanitation worker after a fungal plague that is aware of itself and evolves rapidly has taken over the abandoned city areas, and the game mixes first-person cleaning simulation with resource management and environmental puzzle-solving. The main activity in the game is related to “spore containment.” You have a pressure washer, chemical sprayers, and UV sterilization tools at your disposal to remove mold from walls, floors, and ventilation systems. Still, you must use different cleaning agents and techniques to get rid of the different types of spores (toxic black, parasitic green, or airborne yellow) completely. Your “hazmat suit” keeps you alive; it has a wear bar that decreases when you are exposed to spore clouds. You need to patch up the holes with materials that you find; otherwise, you will get infected and experience hallucinations that make you see your surroundings differently. You will be able to explore five “quarantine zones” (Abandoned Hospital, Flooded Subway, Overgrown School, Derelict Factory, and Research Lab) where you can find different types of fungus and loot, and you should be careful as the floors can collapse, there might be pockets of toxic gas, and the spore-infested beasts can be aggressive. The “atmosphere scanner” shows the amount of spores in the air and can even reveal hidden paths or loot, but you have to make the batteries from the salvaged electronics. The “residue meter” lets you know how well you have cleaned a place; even if you leave one speck of mold, it will start to grow again and will bring more dangerous fungi. Two players can play “decontamination co-op, ” a multiplayer mode in which they have to clean the same place together, with one player using the pressure washer and the other one applying chemicals and keeping track of hazards. In place of permadeath, there is a “quarantine reset.” If you lose your suit, the level restarts, so Moldwasher is a scary and dirty biohazard cleanup that offers a tense experience.
