FISH is a simulation video game that allows players to explore the dark, deep bottom of a living, conscious ocean. Players take the role of a small, bioluminescent fish in an enormous and dreamlike underwater world that is a mix of exploration, survival, and atmospheric storytelling. The main gameplay is continuously based on “light management”; your fish produces a dim light that helps you see the close environment, attracts different kinds of sea creatures, and shows you the hidden ways. However, your light gradually goes down, so you have to eat the glowing plankton or go to the “coral recharge stations” to get your light back. Movement is natural and based on momentum: a slight movement pushes you ahead, a quick turn makes you dash, and a tail slap gives you a burst of speed with which you can even escape your enemies. The ocean is a living, breathing organism, and it has “ecosystem interactions.” Your presence changes the behavior of the fish schools, which respond to your light by either running away, gathering closely around you, or getting aggressive if you stay too long in their area. You will visit five totally different abyssal zones (the Sunlit Shallows, the Kelp Maze, the Midnight Trench, the Bioluminescent Gardens, and the Abyssal Caldera), each of them characterized by its own types of plants, animals, and environmental dangers such as hydrothermal vents, hidden currents, and predatory leviathans. The “memory fragment” feature encourages you to find ancient, glowing shards that tell the story of the ocean, with each shard granting you a new movement or sensory power like echolocation, camouflage, or burst speed. “Predator evasion” means that you are frequently hiding in small gaps in coral, outswimming patrol routes, or using decoy lights to separate the hunters from you. Multiplayer “ocean wander” mode enables you to see players’ fish at the same time and possible school creations that offer mutual protection and shared glow.
