Infestation: Origins is a nervous, systemic survival-horror game that recounts the story of a terrifying 1980s America, where you play as an exterminator who is sent to clean the strange and mutated vermin out of derelict farms, abandoned diners, and neglected warehouses. The gameplay is a slow and fear-filled process of getting ready and making the move: first, you have to scout contaminated places with limited equipment, such as audio detectors and makeshift cameras, to find nests and understand the mutants’ behaviors, then you can shoot them with poison arrows, traps, and environmental hazards to kill them gradually. Afterward, you are allowed to fight the enemy in a very small confined space, and you do this in the first-person view.

The beings that have been altered biologically—from enormous rats to the telepathic roaches—are not only the foes that the player faces, but are also highly complex AI threats that can learn from the player’s tactics. Through the use of the ventilation shafts, they can come from behind the player. They even make a ruse of death, so that every confrontation is not predictable.

The managing of the resources is the most important thing; there is little ammunition, tools are fragile, and the constantly running down time of the flashlight’s battery makes the player choose between visibility and safety, which is just a final part of the game where the player can turn on the industrial-grade extermination systems to get rid of the nest, if the player can survive the panic stricken, last-ditch swarm that is triggered by the system.
