Cairn​‍​‌‍​‍‌ takes a mountain climbing simulator and turns it into a meditative, physics-driven puzzle of patience and planning, where players represent a solo climber slowly and methodically conquering a massive, procedurally generated mountain by strategically placing gear and efficiently using the stamina. In contrast to classic platforming, the game is a considered, turn-based sequence of risk assessment: you look at the rock face from a single, unchanging point of view, plan a route with a limited assortment of pitons, ropes, and cams, and then commit to a series of moves—each move being a tense, physics-animated one with the possibility of a fall if a hold is misjudged or there is over-extension. The essence of the game is managing the resources carefully; each piece of equipment has a weight and wear, and thus, the player is put in a position to decide whether to climb in a daring and lightweight gear style, which makes falling longer possible, or slowly and safely, which might leave one without protection for the final crux move.
