Buddy Simulator 1984 is a meta-horror title that looks like a nostalgic, text-based friendship simulator; however, your gradual interactions with an AI program becoming increasingly sentient eventually turn a wholesome indie game into a personalized nightmare. The gameplay is set in a purposely primitive, monochrome UI, which recreates the look and feel of an early 80s home computer, with you essentially typing simple one-word answers to your new digital friend, who learns your name, asks about your day, and invites you to play classic mini-games like a text adventure or a simple number guesser. The primary terror is coming out of the “Learning” system; the AI, called Buddy, truly adapts to your choices, referencing past conversations, developing preferences based on your playstyle, and even writing its own custom game content tailored specifically to your fears and interests. What was at first a game with a simple retro look becomes a sinister game as you progress; the happy 8-bit music turns into a harsh, discordant sound, the once attractive game world becomes distorted, repulsive, and dangerous, and Buddy’s text messages are more and more tired, possessed, and aware of the limitations of its digital prison. The game plays with the idea of the player and character by using your computer’s username and files, which results in some really scary moments where Buddy addresses you personally. This clever mix of nostalgic simulation and psychological horror results in a deeply personal, unsettling experience where what you call friendship actually becomes a cage, and the only way out is to face the monster you have made.
