The First Nightmare is a single-player, disorienting and deeply personal, descending into a reactive, psychological hellscape, where your own fears become your enemies in real-time. Essentially, the game is created in such a manner that it is not possible to overcome it, only to go through it. It is the player who experiences the horror that is most similar to his own psyche. The core mechanics of the game are based on the paradoxical ‘Courage Actions’, which are those that allow the player to take on the fear in question bravely. For instance, if the player’s goal is to walk through a totally dark room by using only his hearing, he would have to depend on the very whispers that will guide him, but at the same time, try to deceive him.

At the beginning of the First Nightmare, the game starts with a ‘Fear Profiler’ that recognizes your subconscious responses to very quiet sounds, very fast pictures, and very unclear shapes, which is the basis for a new fear profile of the player’s end of deep fear. The whole first nightmare experience gets personalized just for you through the fear profile. As an illustration, suppose the player is afraid of the dark; it is quite likely that he will discover that his flashlight is going out very quickly, and there is not a single battery to be found anywhere. Conversely, a player with an extreme fear of confined spaces will discover that the changing corridors are getting smaller around them.
