PAYDAY 2 takes the heist genre beyond being just another shooter to a complex and satisfying tactical playground of 911, where victory is counted not only in ripped-off treasure but also in the least possible mistakes made during the execution. In essence, the game is a painstaking exercise of both planning and spontaneity; players have to gradually develop the talents of their heroes, e.g. Mastermind, Enforcer, Ghost, to become capable of handling tasks like baking bandaged, cutting open ATMs, and silently opening locks.

The very first scene may be a quiet and cautious stealth mission, where crews are using ECM jammers to hold alarms for a few seconds and attending suspicious pagers in a deadly game of impersonation, escalating in a flamboyant, fiery last stand if a guard comes across a corpse. This event shift leads to non-stop police onslaughts of different intensity, from common SWAT units to darkened special forces, and heavy-duty Bulldozer, who are armed with both armor and crushers, thus, the gang must take cover, install sentry guns and ammo bags for the safe drill that is getting the vault open—all while shouting for help followed by throwing the loot into the escape vehicle.

The brilliance of this demure, rapid, and engaging exchange between quiet and accurate shots and the raucous killing spree, not to mention the iconic soundtrack playing with the same force as the attack, are the reasons why so many different outcomes of winning and losing are possible in this game.
