At the same time as its successor was taking over an extensive criminal empire, PAYDAY: The Heist was still a stripped-down, centered, and extremely brilliant celebration of close combat and survival. The developers deliberately dropped skill trees and customisation in favour of pure, unfiltered action. This decision turned the game into a demonstration of controlled chaos, where the player and his crew are cast as under-trained but resolute bank robbers involved in hectic, escalating, and cinematic shootouts. Seven heists are the game’s climactic scenes, each one a detailed and tightly choreographed storyline retracing the protagonist’s journey as if it were the third act of a Michael Mann movie, where the execution of the relief wave-type assault by the police mastering is the way to go.

The notable feature is the teamwork based on the objectives that you do not simply kill the enemy but rather desperately protect a drilling thermal lance, hastily put together a bridge of money bags to pass through the skylight, and push civilians into hostage trade to escape the captor, all this. At the same time, an animated soundtrack and an assault pager that causes you to panic and thus fight better are present. It is a dirty, hard, and extremely cooperative game, which makes you feel the deadly excitement of a robbery that went wrong. Every reload, every thrown ammo bag, and every partner you revive are moments of victory that you fought for against the impossible odds.
