Hexen II is one of the few games that combine the success of its core first-person shooter with being an unusually complex and non-linear protagonist-first adventure; thus, in effect, it doesn’t seem that the developers were looking for direct competitors in the action game market, but more for those in the dark fantasy dungeon crawler field. The player gets to control one out of the four character classes that are provided—Paladin, Crusader, Necromancer, or Assassin—where every single one not only has different weapons and magic but also changes their way of dealing completely the game’s challenges so that it can be through the Paladin’s holy mace or the Necromancer’s summoned vermin.

The whole planet is organized into four hubs, which represent the different mythologies—a rotting Mesoamerican temple, a grim medieval castle, a sand ruin of Egypt, and a classical Greco-Roman acropolis – where everyone is a self-contained puzzle box. This bubble is filled with connected secrets, environmental logic puzzles, and key-hunting quests that require careful watching and wandering.

The hand-to-hand combat against the bestiary of the inhuman enemies, in which controlling your character’s progressive skills and different mana types is very important, is the way this slow, considered style is being interrupted. The end-product has a very strong atmosphere and is intellectual to its core. However, still, the feeling is not that you are going through levels, but more like deciphering a series of ancient, evil, and puzzling things where both your brain and spellbook help you to fight.
