Life Is Strange: Double Exposure reimagines the adored narrative-led genre with a fresh and thrilling new feature— a split-reality game mechanism that enables the main character Max Caulfield (or a new character might be introduced according to the storyline) consciously to move back and forth between two orthogonal times, each containing entirely different turned-off states of the world. The task for gamers is to get to the bottom of a murder case, with the story playing out diversely in one world and another. They can use the power of rewinding action not only to erase their previous decisions but also to change and compare the evidence on the two different islands of reality.

Interactions, talks with non-playable characters, and the most critical moments are reshaped frequently depending on which timeline one is in, thus creating a multi-branching narrative that makes understanding those riddles possible only by thinking in four-dimensional terms – past, present, and two realities parted from each other. The game unveils another interesting feature called “Echo Vision,” which enables the characters to have glimpses of some illusory events from the opposite side, and that is one way to discover the hidden beam between them.

The essential part of the game is still the emotional narrative. However, the title managed to raise the level of the facial animations and utterly invaded the atmosphere with a gloomy soundtrack. Whether experiencing the constant factor of change brought about by the swings of the relationships, unraveling the obscured facts, or the most critical of all the choices, which of the two realities to rescue, Double Exposure goes further by shifting the principal feature of the series, that of choice and consequence, to new grounds.
