Portal 2’s game design is a supreme example of inventive puzzle design that connects physical challenges with a funny story to tell. Players use the famous Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, which allows them to shoot portals onto a surface in a way of making some magic to door-sill, gets the portals interconnected and, are consequently able to re-arrange the space, time, and physics basics according to their new conception of that which is inherent in the game. The puzzles develop from teleportation assignments into tough, multi-layered experiments with light bridges, trance beams, and gels that change surfaces. The propulsion gel gives speed, the repulsion gel brings a bouncy texture to walls, and the conversion gel is for installing portals on otherwise non-transportable materials.

Using the addition of the co-op mode, a third dimension of depth is added that makes teamwork and communication a necessity as two robots, Atlas and P-Body, have to distribute the portals in such a way that it would require the simultaneous activation of four of them. The developers’ most significant achievement in the game can be seen in how the player learns mechanics by step, as the developer is not pushing a rigid agenda and how the player can try different things and fail. Yet, they feel rewarded rather than frustrated. With GLaDOS’s wry wisecracks and Wheatley’s clumsy escapades serving as a framework, each chamber comes across as a blackly comic playground where wittiness is indispensable, as well as logic.

Whether throwing oneself across vast chasms or outwitting sentient turrets, the game’s dynamics remain inventive. Thus, it becomes evident that a basic gaming concept can revolutionize interactive gaming when it achieves perfection.
