Imperial Ambitions is a grand strategy epic where one finds oneself on the throne of a fledgling empire. Here, dynastic politics, military conquest, economic supremacy, and all other forms of power intermingle in a living, reactive world. The game revolves mostly around a gameplay loop of ‘edicts/influence’. You command the country’s culture, economy, religion, and military through decrees; at the same time, each decree you choose to pass is a factor determining the loyalty of the nobility, province production, and rival empires’ opinion. The “Council of Lords” offers you different options with their advantages and dangers: a power-seeking general would make your army stronger but at the same time might start a civil war; meanwhile, a secretive spymaster can give valuable info at the expense of his loyalty, as he might have his own agenda. Exploration is the journey to discover the world of a huge, randomly generated map with various types of continents. Each has peculiar resources, cultures, and strategic points. The ‘trade network’ system lets you create and monopolize trade routes of your own choosing while also risking pirate attacks and trade bans. Diplomacy is very elaborate, with opportunities for marriage, alliance, espionage, and subjugation. However, each of these diplomatic moves would directly impact your “prestige.” This is the amount of reputation you’ve achieved, so prestige is the game’s way of unlocking new features for you, in turn. Multiplayer in the game is limited to 6 players, and they all coexist and interact in the same world. It’s the kind of game where one would have to keep their allies at a minimum, or else the chances of betrayal could skyrocket. There is no death, so it’s more of a ‘life or death legacy score’, i.e., a dynastic score that determines what kind of legacy the family will leave through generations.
