In the game “Gynophobia“, players take the role of Alex’s fractured mindset, a character struggling with a deeply rooted fear of women while moving through a surreal, dream-like universe where the line between perception and reality is unclear. The gameplay mainly focuses on “exposure therapy.” The main challenge here is that you have to overcome your fears by going through different stages that are full of female figures; some are kind, like nurses, while others are dangerous, such as matriarchs, and with every interaction, your “panic meter” goes up in terms of both closeness and making eye contact. One of the interesting features is the “breathing mechanic”, which allows a player to reduce panic levels and heighten situational awareness by matching the rhythm of the character’s breathing. The “perception filter” function lets you change your view by seeing things in a different light that can make threatening figures appear as harmless objects or friendly faces (for example, a scary woman might be visualized as a smiling child), but, of course, overusing it will wear out that limited tool pretty quickly. Five different dreamscape levels, such as the Hospital Ward, the Schoolyard, the Wedding Hall, the Office Tower, and the Subway Station, where the player can explore and uncover hidden memories along with environmental puzzles and symbolic obstacles, have been set as an outlet for various forms of trauma that Alex was suffering from. Players will also be able to get more knowledge about Alex’s problem through a system called “memory fragments.” Players will collect various items by exploring, which will open up backstory and, at the same time, expose the origin of Alex’s phobia. The game does not have a “multiplayer” mode; however, players can leave their “community notes,” which are messages that others see. Instead of dying in “permadeath” in “relapse” mode, you get thrown back into the level where you left off, but a bit of what you did gets retained, so “Gynophobia” gives a profound and thoughtful look at mental health and recovery.
