Better Than Dead is a game where the player becomes a reanimated test subject in a very tight, enclosed underground research laboratory. Permadeath, emergent AI, and scavenger-crafting combine with this environment to give rise to a very tense, punishing survival-horror roguelike that doesn’t make any mistakes or have any room for error. The core of the gameplay is the “reboot cycles”; each death results in the player getting a new body to control, the previous run’s memories being only bits and pieces. In doing so, one needs to figure out the laboratory’s sinister past as well as deal with starvation, radiation, and the constant danger posed by mutated security drones, as well as other escaped experimenters. The “bio-suit, ” besides being your lifeline, helps in the regulation of temperature and filtering out toxins, as well as providing a HUD display; however, it gets damaged, and the only fix is to scavenge scrap metal. “Fragmented memory” encourages further exploration. When one finds a data log, research note, or a tape recording, it leads to discovering the director’s whereabouts and escape routes, among other things. It also unveils a story about the failed experiment. “Permadeath” means that every interaction becomes critical. If you’re unlucky and you die, the last save point resets, and you are sent back to the very beginning, but your next body might be spawned near the previous corpse, and that can give you a chance of recovering the lost things. “Survival co-op” with multiplayer mode means that up to three players can work together to gather resources and revive each other.
