In Hello Neighbor: Hide and Seek, players get to be the Neighbor’s children and live in a tragedy that is the prequel, where the fun of the siblings slowly turns into the paranoid obsession that is the main series. The main gameplay is about “asymmetrical hide-and-seek”; each level is a small sandbox where one sibling hides while the other one seeks, with the seeker using environmental clues and audio cues to track their target. In contrast, the hider uses stealth, traps, and distraction items (toys, wind-up mice, slingshots) to escape. The “memory system” remembers how you interact with each environment; children’s emotions change depending on your actions, and this affects their behaviour in later levels. You get to visit “childhood vignettes” in the Neighbor’s House; each level is a memory turned into a surreal playground: the Attic of Forgotten Toys, the Basement of Broken Promises, the Garden of Lost Games, and the Living Room of Silent Dinners. “Child’s logic” is the rule that guides the puzzle solving; for example, you might have to stack blocks to get to a high shelf, make a fake key with a crayon, or lure a cat to a place to open a door. The “co-op mode” gives two players a chance to play the two siblings, with the one who is seeking being able to use a special “sibling sense” power to see recent hider footprints, while the hider will be able to set up “decoy” traps. “Collectibles” are items that the children have lost, and when found, would make the plot more comprehensible through flashback cutscenes. At the same time, “Replayability” is a feature that comes from the dynamic AI that changes hiding spots depending on previous choices, and “nightmare variants” are the alternate, more difficult versions of each level.
